B&Q is to close its Exmouth store, it has been confirmed.

The DIY chain said staff at the store, at Liverton Business Park, have been told it is to close.

The future of the store, which has served the town for more than 20 years, has been in doubt since last month, when B&Q’s parent company, Kingfisher, announced it would be closing 60 UK stores during the next two years.

A B&Q spokesman said: “Following expiry of the lease, we have informed staff at the Exmouth store that it will be closing next year, in 2016.

“Our focus for the coming months is on redeploying as many colleagues as we can within B&Q and the Kingfisher Group.”

Exmouth Chamber of Commerce chairman Ian MacQueen said: “It’s very unfortunate with the loss of jobs.

“When the town of Exmouth is expanding, it’s a shame a major retailer is withdrawing.”
