JOB seekers will have to travel to Exeter to see an adviser after the Department for Work and Pensions this week decided to close the Rolle Street job centre.Exmouth is just one of 19 Jobcentre Plus offices across the South West. This will force job seekers and people with pension and benefit claims enquiries to either talk to an adviser from a call centre or travel to Exeter or Honiton to talk face-to-face.The Government describes the closure as 'modernisation of the Jobcentre Plus network' in the South West. In Devon, the offices in Exmouth, Axminister, Ilfracombe, Kingsbridge, Okehampton, Sidmouth and Tavistock - which were cut back from full-time opening to part-time last year - will be replaced by what the DWP calls a "more comprehensive, modern service".Caroline Flint, Employment Minister at the Department for Work and Pensions, said: "The changes are the latest stage in our modernisation programme that will lead to more efficient and effective services for our customers, releasing resources to our Jobcentres, while providing best value for taxpayers. "The service we provide our customers is at the forefront of all our decisions and we have been working closely with partners to ensure everyone can benefit from the expertise and support available at Jobcentre Plus. "Where offices are closing, we are working with local authorities and other organisations to ensure those services remain in the community, for example in libraries or community centres." Phil Weeks, the Jobcentre Plus district manager for Devon and Cornwall, said where it was difficult to get to job centres, the branches had been kept open."People travel from Exmouth to Exeter for day-to-day shopping.
