AN application to build a new vehicle access at a Salterton Road property was not backed by town councillors after they had 'grave concerns' about the motives of the owners. The owners of 51A Salterton Road, Exmouth, applied to build the access - but provoked concerns from residents.Paul Humphries, of Salterton Road, said, as an immediate neighbour, he would be 'materially' affected, and added: "The area falls within The Avenues, a burgeoning conservation area."This proposal does not accord with the Avenues' Design Statement...this proposal erodes the visual status quo."The existing access could be utilised to serve the same purpose."He said visibility would be limited because of the cars parked along Salterton Road, and the only solution would be to remove existing parking."I have concerns this is tantamount to an additional dwelling."Councillor Ken Harper said: "I have grave concerns about this application. They have been using the (other) drive for many years. I think there is some kind of ulterior motive for this application, to develop the property at a later date. I would refuse it."The plans will be considered by East Devon planners.
