I would just like to congratulate all the people who have hammered another nail into the coffin lid of our town of Exmouth. They must all be planning a celebration at the news of ASDA's decision not to pursue their interest in improving a rapidly declining town.Graham Kirby wrote into The Journal not so long ago with his well constructed thoughts. Among them was the comment that, if we did not seize this opportunity to move Exmouth forward, it would be another 30 years before a similar chance was offered again. I pray this prediction does not come to fruition, but I now fear for the future of our town, a place where I have lived for all of my life.It would be interesting to ascertain what percentage of the resistance to ASDA's plans have come from 'outside forces'. I just wonder what percentage of the anti-Asda group carry out the bulk of their shopping outside of Exmouth? Do these people embrace all the local shops or do they prefer to shop at Darts Farm, Waitrose in Sidmouth, Marks & Spencer's in Exeter etc, etc? The negative attitude of the majority of these people is why we have shop after shop lying empty. This cannot be put down to the present economic climate as it has been the case in Exmouth for many a year. As usual, the silent majority will have to suffer because of these people. It's about time these protesters were dragged, kicking and screaming if need be, into the 21st Century. As a final point, as this letter may provoke some response, I would ask that everybody who bothers to write in, pro or anti-ASDA, also adds how long they have lived in our town.
