Efforts to improve Budleigh Salterton beach - which could fail new standards for water bathing quality - are to be discussed by the Environment Agency.

The beach is one of around 20 in the South West which the agency says may not meet the standards required by the new European Bathing Water Directive, which will come into force from 2015.

Now the agency is holding a series of community events to discuss the problem with residents.

A spokesman said: “Bathing water quality has improved significantly over the past two decades but more needs to be done by water companies, businesses, farmers, local authorities and communities to help at risk bathing waters pass the new standards.”

The first community events, including at Seaton and Lyme Regis, have already been announced, and an event at Budleigh is set to be confirmed in the near future.
