Advance in equal rights benefits all

PUBLISHED: 07:00 25 April 2014

I refer to the letter from Tamsin Richards who ‘complains’ about your newspaper’s coverage of the marriage between two men in Exmouth recently.

Surely the marriage was reported not only to publicise this joyous occasion for two people who had happily lived together for many years, but to celebrate a significant advance in equality in this country?

Was it not a further demonstration that we in the United Kingdom no longer discriminate between people because of their sexual orientation, race or colour, and that every individual should have equal rights, regardless of anything?

As to the teachings of the church, I would remind Ms Richards of Saint Paul’s precept “I do not permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man; she must be silent” (1 Timothy 2:12 ) and wonder whether she is also inclined to follow that advice to the letter ?
