A 20-foot fishing boat sank on Saturday morning after being reported to be adrift and heading towards Orcombe Point.

The unmanned vessel was spotted travelling along the old channel with waves breaking over the side.

Brixham coastguards tasked Exmouth's all-weather lifeboat where the crew established no one was aboard the drifting vessel.

The floating boat still had its anchor attached and sunk before the lifeboat could reach it.

Exmouth RNLI spokesman Andy Rodgers said: "At this time of year, with big spring tides and rough weather, it is advisable to check your moorings.

"But of course, only to do so when it is safe and the weather is calm.
