Regarding the Longboat Cafe development at Budleigh Salterton, I am writing in support of this project.

I have followed with interest your readers' letters. I have recently returned from a lovely holiday in Jersey and I went to two different restaurants which have been developed, both overlooking the sea.

One was an old boathouse and the other is called a beach house which encompasses a cafe with upstairs restaurant. They are both in attractive locations with a modern style and glass fronted.

These have not destroyed the natural beauty of the Jersey coastline and have blended in with older buildings around.

The advantage has been to have superb food overlooking the sea. This is what I feel Brent and Jane Hushon are trying to achieve at the Longboat.

One of your readers described the building as a monstrosity. I ask them to look again at the shelter which, at present, is the real monstrosity.

As for the planned design of the building, it would blend in well with the modern house above, which was allowed by the planning committee and I feel is another example of how modern architecture can also be tasteful.

In fact, as I walked along the seafront today, I realised that the public will mainly see the side of the cafe building. It is only when you walk down to the edge of the sea that the cafe is in full view from a front aspect.

I hope others will share my support of the need to enjoy a meal overlooking the sea.

No, we do not want a fast food café with flashing lights, as some readers predict, but a restaurant that offers the chance to see the beauty of Budleigh through glass.

I wish others could enjoy those magical moments I had in Jersey and I hope to be eating overlooking the sea in Budleigh, in the near future.

Mrs J Clapson,

Copp Hill Lane,

Budleigh Salterton.
