A crass comment

On the font page of the Budleigh Journal last week, commenting on the Budleigh Electoral Register, Councillor Channon remarked, “I don’t know if older people are more assiduous when it comes to voting or if someone is eager to get their 25 per cent single person’s discount when their partner dies”.
That is probably the most crass comment I’ve read from a local councillor for a long while (and there has been some strong competition)!
Does she really believe that ‘getting their single person’s discount’ is a priority when someone is recently bereaved?
Most people faced with the death of a loved one, find that notifying the necessary authorities of the death is a painful task, but receiving mail addressed to that person is also extremely painful.
Bereaved people just plod on, Christine, ticking off the list of essential task and notifications. I doubt that counting the benefits arising from the loss is one of them.
