National Grid has issued a message for South West residents ahead of Storm Austen.

The storm is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the South West and South Wales on Friday, October 23.

National Grid said: "Our electricity network is built to be resilient, but extreme weather can impact power supplies.

"We’ll be monitoring the weather and our network closely, with engineers ready to respond quickly and safely and restore supplies if there are any disruptions."

The company has also shared advice for staying safe during a power cut.

Residents are encouraged to keep a torch and a fully charged mobile phone on hand, along with an external battery pack.

A wind-up, solar, or battery-powered radio is recommended for weather updates.

National Grid also advises using surge protectors for sensitive equipment and keeping non-perishable food in the house.

People are urged to check on neighbours, especially those who may be vulnerable.

Anyone experiencing a power cut can call the free emergency number 105 at any time.

Additional support is available through the Priority Services Register, which offers tailored help for vulnerable customers during outages.

To report a power cut or dangerous situation, residents can use the Power Tracker online tool or contact National Grid through its website.
