A pollution clean-up is being stepped up while a bathing warning remains in place, with laboratory tests still needed before officials can be confident there is no further risk to the public.
The Environment Agency has said it is making progress in its investigation into pollution affecting Littleham Brook in Exmouth.
Officers collected samples from the brook which are undergoing detailed analysis at the agency's laboratory, with results expected early next week.
The Environment Agency plans to install low sandbag weirs over the weekend to help contain pollution which has settled on the riverbed, allowing it to be safely removed.
Specialist contractors have also been brought in to help plan the wider clean-up.
The agency said there were positive signs, with its latest checks showing conditions in the brook were continuing to get better.
However, it said full laboratory results were needed before it could be confident there was no further risk to the public.
Advice against bathing at Exmouth will therefore remain in place over the weekend.
The Environment Agency said: “We understand this will be disappointing for residents and visitors, but it’s important that we have the full picture before changing our advice.
“We’ll continue to closely monitor water quality throughout the weekend and provide further updates.
“For now, please continue to avoid bathing at Exmouth and avoid contact with Littleham Brook.”
