With Parliament now in recess, I’ve been making the most of the opportunity to spend more time out and about across the constituency. It’s been a busy few weeks with a full diary of visits to local businesses, community groups and residents, and I’m really enjoying connecting with so many people who make our area what it is.
Recently, I visited Devon Cliffs and Ladram Bay, two of our largest and most popular holiday parks. It was fantastic to see so many visitors enjoying themselves and making the most of everything our beautiful coast has to offer. From stunning beaches and family attractions to local shops and cafés, you could really feel the positive buzz. It’s a clear reminder of how vital tourism is to our local economy.
Tourism is one of the biggest employers here in the constituency. Sites like these support hundreds of jobs, offer young people their first step into work, and bring vital trade to our high streets and small businesses. Beyond the holiday parks themselves, the benefits spread out to countless local suppliers, tradespeople and services, helping keep the whole community thriving.
But like many sectors, tourism is facing real challenges. Rising costs, especially energy bills and insurance premiums, are putting serious pressure on margins. Add to that the recent changes in tax and National Insurance contributions, and it’s become harder for businesses to plan ahead with confidence. I’ve heard these concerns loud and clear during my visits, and I’m committed to making their voices heard in Westminster.
We should be proud of what we offer here in Exmouth and Exeter East, not just for visitors but for the communities who live and work here all year round. Our tourism industry helps keep our area alive, and it deserves our full support.
Thank you to everyone working hard to welcome visitors and keep our local economy moving.
