Bowel Cancer West has been confirmed as the Charity of the Year for the Devon County Show.

The charity has plans to raise awareness by creating the world's longest toilet roll chain.

They invite everyone attending the show, running from Thursday, May 16 to Saturday, May 18 to contribute a decorated toilet roll tube to the cause.

The Devon-based charity is dedicated to boosting survival rates of bowel cancer patients in the region.

In its 15th year of operation, the team is keen to appeal to all age groups during the show, highlighting that bowel cancer affects both the young and old.

In addition to the toilet roll endeavour, there will be an interactive stand at the show.

This will include a smoothie bike, where participants can create their own healthy drinks using pedal power.

Additionally, young attendees can enjoy decorating their own toilet rolls for the record-breaking chain.

The current Guinness World Record for the longest toilet roll chain spans 9,208 metres, consisting of a staggering 96,080 toilet roll tubes, set in 2010.

David Darke, patron and founder of Bowel Cancer West, said: "Raising awareness of Bowel Cancer is crucial.

"Too many people either aren't aware of the symptoms of bowel cancer or choose to ignore them.

"Our work is essential to ensure there is early detection for those who are diagnosed.

"If caught early, over 90% of cases can be treated successfully.

"The Devon County Show, with its huge and diverse audience, provides an ideal platform for us to carry out our work."

To further their advocacy, Bowel Cancer West has conducted a survey of 1,000 adults in the region.

The results are concerning, with 91 per cent admitting that their knowledge of bowel cancer was either average or poor.

A mere 58 per cent of those qualified for the bowel cancer screening programme attended their appointments, while 40 per cent reported embarrassment discussing bowel issues with a GP.

In light of these results, Devon County Show manager, Lisa Moore, said: "Most of us know someone who has either had a scare or has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

"I’m delighted the Devon County Show is able to support Bowel Cancer West and help them to achieve their objectives."

Alongside the stand, volunteers will collect donations throughout the showground.

Visitors are encouraged to bring spare change or donate via card.
