Otterton's Soap Box Derby - which last took place in 1993 - is making a triumphant comeback on Easter Monday.
The event, a competition using home-built go-karts, has attracted 20 entries including one from as far away as Hertfordshire. There have been two from Bicton College and several from Otterton and other East Devon locations.
Otterton parish councillor Ian Simpson said: “We have revived the village’s famous Soap Box Derby - last seen some 30 years ago - in order to help raise funds for our community playground.
"We have been staggered by the interest and response from both competitors and those who want to come to watch. The challenge this time around is for distance. We can’t wait to see the actual entries - some of which have clearly been fantastically engineered - in action!”
The 2024 derby will take place at the top of the hill opposite Stantyway Farm in Otterton, with gates opening at 9am. Food and event stickers will be available from 10am, there will be a driver briefing at 10.30am and car design judging at 10.40am.
The actual derby runs will begin at 11am under a giant ‘START’ banner with a bespoke event logo featuring a racing-helmeted otter created by local book and commercial illustrator Patrick Llewellyn. There are two age categories - adults and 17 and under. There will also be a design competition for both categories with entrants judged prior to the start.
