A drop-in session is being held at Exmouth Museum this week for anyone interested in joining its team of volunteers.

On Friday, March 22 there will be an open-door event at the museum in Sheppard’s Row on between 12 noon and 1pm.

It's a chance to find out more about helping either 'front of house' or behind the scenes. As well as working at the museum, the volunteers have a social network and often meet for coffee, lunch or drinks.

The museum will reopen for the new season on Monday, March 25, and its team have plenty of plans for the coming months.

Visitor numbers increased last year and the team are hoping to continue this trend, building on last year’s events and initiatives. These included inviting local Scouts, Cubs and Brownies to hold meetings at the museum and learn about Exmouth’s history. The team also worked closely with the Friends of the Exe group, and the museum was represented at outside events including Organ Donation Awareness Day and Exmouth Festival. Its Victorian-themed Christmas event attracted more than 120 adults and 50 children, most of whom had never visited the museum before.

The museum’s education officer Matt Higgins and other committee members are planning a series of 'Wine and Cheese' Evenings for local teachers and youth leaders, offering guided tours of the exhibits and the potential to access research materials.

There are also plans to carry out much-needed repair work to part of the museum known as The Link, and the museum team would like to hear from any architects/surveyors or builders who would be prepared to donate their time.

Fundraising coffee mornings are held on the third Thursday of each month throughout the year at The Axis Centre between 10:30 and 12:30.

The museum’s opening hours will be Monday to Thursday from 10am until 4pm, and Saturday mornings between 10am and 1pm. It will be closed on Fridays for cleaning and archive work. The team are happy to open out of hours, by arrangement, for any groups who would like to have a private visit.
