Woodbury Primary School celebrates British Science Week by holding its own marble-run competition.

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

The theme for 2024 is ‘time’, and it is the 30th anniversary of British Science Week! To celebrate the week, the school held a whole school STEM competition.

They launched the competition with a WOW assembly, explaining the importance of STEM and we thought about examples of how time affects every part of people's lives.

Their whole school challenge was to create a marble run that runs for the longest time. Key Stage One took their learning outside to achieve this in groups of six using some of our forest school equipment.

They used a mixture of drainpipes, tyres and wooden planks to create their marble run along the school’s playground. Key Stage Two used recycled materials to create their marble runs in teams of four.

Luke Barnes-Jones from The House of Marbles also came in to announce the winners from each class, and they also kindly donated prizes and awarded certificates to every winning team. One child was also selected from each class for a BLP (Building Learning Power) award.

A spokesman for the school said: "These children had shown either great resilience, reciprocity, resourcefulness or reflectiveness during the challenge.

"It was a very successful day and it was wonderful to see every class take on our whole school challenge so enthusiastically.

"We hope that these skills will inspire the children to think about future careers involving STEM skills and look forward to our next British Science Week."
