Some 473 tonnes of recycled steel cans from Devon will be smelted into new products.
The steel cans were gathered in 2023 from homes across East Devon and will be transformed into raw steel at foundries in England and Wales.
This comes as East Devon District Council was ranked as the sixth-best local authority in England for household waste recycling in the 2022/23 fiscal year.
In terms of figures, 60 per cent of the 46,500 tonnes of waste collected was sent for recycling, composting or reuse.
Steel cans can be endlessly recycled, ensuring their ongoing contribution to waste management efforts.
Local authorities suggest putting steel cans into recycling sacks along with plastic and aluminium items.
These cans are then separated out by magnets at recycling centres.
