473 tonnes of steel cans were collected by East Devon District Council for recycling last year.

This material was then smelted down into raw steel, which can be used for new products.

Households were asked to put all of their steel cans in recycling sacks along with plastic and aluminium items collected from the kerbside.

The steel cans were then separated from the other materials by magnets at the Council's recycling facility.

Subsequently, the cans were dispatched to foundries in England or Wales.

Recycling officers remind residents steel cans should be the only steel items included in recycling sacks.

Other steel items can be taken to any local recycling centres.

Steel cans can be recycled indefinitely as "metal recycles forever", says the Council.

Earlier this month, East Devon District Council was ranked as the sixth best local authority in England for recycling household waste in 2022/23.

The data from Defra showed the Council recycled, composted, or reused 60 per cent of the 46,500 tonnes of household waste it collected.
