Antisocial drivers in Budleigh Salterton are being warned that they will face penalties if caught by police.

Local councillor Henry Riddell has taken up the issue after receiving several reports of noisy and dangerous driving in the Lime Kiln car park, as well as motorists speeding in the town centre.

Last Friday (February 230 he met Sergeant Richard Stonecliffe at the car park and discussed the action police are taking to tackle the problem.

Cllr Riddell (Conservative, Budleigh & Raleigh) said: "The message from the police was clear. Driving recklessly is not a victimless crime and it will not be tolerated. Richard told me that there are lots of enforcement actions they can take if drivers are caught such as fines, penalty points and they can even seize vehicles.

"I appreciate the frustration from residents but please be assured that I am engaging with the police, who have stepped up patrols in the town late at night. They have already caught and dealt with several drivers in the car park and around the town since these incidents became apparent on social media a couple of weeks ago."

Cllr Riddell is urging residents to continue reporting incidents of dangerous or antisocial driving to the police via the 101 service.

He said: "Both myself and the police are engaging to make sure residents are heard on the matter. I am in contact with the police and if they feel the problem is persisting despite action from them I will explore measures East Devon District Council could take.

"Once again I thank the police for the work they do and fully support the steps they're taking."
