Exmouth is the busiest train station in East Devon in 2023, new figures from the Office for Rail and Road (ORR) show.

The ORR's data shows Exmouth had 898,376 entries and exits between April 2022 and March 2023.

Axminster was second with 366,450, followed by Honiton (288,228), Cranbrook (103,238) and Feniton (52,048).

Previous data showed that Axminster had a total of 303,842 entries and exits between April 2021 to March 2022, showing numbers fell last year.

In the year to March 2022, Cranbrook had 95,52 entries and exits; Exmouth 807,310, Feniton 47,544 and Honiton 255,166.

Cranbrook station opened in 2015, meaning it is one of the newest stations to open in East Devon on the South West mainline.

Exmouth, the highest-ranking station in East Devon, ranks as the 502nd busiest station in the UK. Axminster ranked 909th, Cranbrook 1,617th, Feniton 1,938th and Honiton 1,039th.

London’s Liverpool Street station is the busiest in Britain. The number of entries and exits was 80.4 million in the year to the end of March.

The busiest stations outside London were Birmingham New Street (30.7 million), Leeds (24.0 million) and Manchester Piccadilly (23.6 million).

Glasgow Central was the most used station in Scotland (20.8 million) and Cardiff Central topped the list in Wales (10.2 million).

The least used station that was open throughout the whole year was Denton, Greater Manchester, with just 34 entries and exits.

The new Elizabeth Line on the London Underground has been cited as one of the main differences in ways passengers have travelled this year.

Transport for London’s (TfL) Elizabeth line director Howard Smith said: “The Elizabeth line has been a transformational new railway for London, connecting east and west through 10 modern stations, with around 4.3 million journeys being made each week and more than 270 million journeys since it opened last year.

“Liverpool Street, Paddington, Farringdon, Tottenham Court Road and Stratford all being in the top 10 busiest stations in the UK, and four of the 10 most popular journeys being on the Elizabeth line, shows the popularity of the railway and how it has offered new journey options in London and beyond, as well as a new direct route to Heathrow Airport.”
