A new knitted postbox topper to commemorate the Royal Marines has appeared on the Strand in time for Remembrance weekend.

The ‘Green Lid’ appeared on top of the post box outside the bank on The Strand and is the inspiration and work of Bryony Crump, a member of Exmouth Yarn-Bombers, who has been working on the unique Remembrance topper since July. Hours of work and skill have been dedicated to producing this work of art.

The topper features a Royal Marines Commando Green Beret, poppies and a band around the edge striped in Corps colours with the words 'Per Mare, Per Terram' - the well-known Royal Marines motto, Latin for ‘By Sea, By Land’.

To make sure that all the details and colours were absolutely spot on Bryony consulted former Royal Marine, Phil Gilby, another local resident and membership operations director (West) with Royal Marines Charity, (RMA).

Phil said: “Exmouth Yarn-Bombers bring a lot of happiness to the community with the incredible effort they put into the toppers that are all around the town.

"The Bootneck topper is in the perfect spot overlooking the Memorial in time for Remembrance. We are incredibly thankful to Bryony for all her hard work.”

“I was so grateful for all Phil’s advice – it was invaluable to make sure it was all exactly right,” added Bryony, “and I am so glad that the RMA has approved the final product.

I come from a Forces’ family myself (although not Marines) and I when we moved to Exmouth 20 years’ ago, I really picked up on the links between the town and the Corps.

The work the Charity does makes such a difference to the Royal Marines family. Please, if you are passing the topper, follow the QR code to find out more about the work of the RMA and, perhaps, make a donation. Or the link to the Royal British Legion.”
