Sewage pollution alerts were issued for five East Devon beaches after the heavy rain on Sunday, September 17.
Surfers Against Sewage, who monitor sewage discharges into the sea, issued warnings for Exmouth, Sandy Bay, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth and Seaton.
The alerts, displayed on Surfers Against Sewage’s website today (Monday, September 18), indicate that ‘storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours’.
The real-time map also gives details of the sewer overflows in each location and where the sewage is discharged – in most cases, a few hundred metres out at sea.
The torrential rain caused flash flooding on roads in many parts of Devon, including Maer Lane in Exmouth and the B3178 in East Budleigh, near Bicton Park. Exeter Airport also flooded and had to close on Sunday afternoon, but opened again on Monday after staff spent the night cleaning up.
