The last event of the 2022-23 season for the Exmouth & Budleigh Anglo-French Society was a garden party at member Bernard Cracknell’s home in Exmouth.

About 30 members were able to enjoy the garden’s colourful floral displays and superb lawn from the vantage point of a large patio, with views over the Maer and out to sea.

Marian Beaumont, Chair of the Society said: “We were watching the weather forecast hopefully in the run-up, with the chances of a fine afternoon improving as we drew closer to the day. In the end, it was the wind that caused the odd problem, including a ‘Mary Poppins’ moment when a sun umbrella rose vertically into the air, lifted by a strong gust of wind. Fortunately, no one was attached to it at the time and it returned to earth of its own accord.”

Members chatted amiably over drinks and a variety of delicious cakes provided by members. There was plenty to share, and some to take home. A number of members competed in a game of croquet set out on the lawn, while others tried their hand at ‘boules’.

Everyone went home happy, content to have shared this moment of friendship and relaxation in such beautiful surroundings.

The Society’s new season starts next month, with the first event being the regular ‘cuppa and conversation’ session on Monday, 4th September at the Wesley Community Café in Budleigh Salterton (2.45 to 4pm). This is followed on Monday 18th September with more ‘cuppa and conversation’ at Ocean, Exmouth (3.30- 4.45pm The Deck, first floor).

“These sessions, repeated monthly throughout the year, give members the chance to meet up and chat in French over tea/coffee and cake,” explained Marian. “It’s an informal drop-in, much enjoyed by our members. Anyone who wishes to practise and improve their speaking skills in French can benefit - everyone is encouraged to chip in and have a go.”

New members will receive a warm welcome. Annual membership is currently just £5 for the year. For further details, ring Catherine on 07855 194408 or Marian on 07812 899635.
