Budleigh Music Festival got off to a flying start at the weekend, with a series of events aimed at introducing members of the community to music and dance.
Friday saw a choral workshop take place with composer Bob Chilcott, who spent the day with singers from across Devon, including school children from three schools in the local area. Over 175 audience members bought tickets to watch the performance later that evening.
And on Sunday, a mixed audience of care home residents and ballroom enthusiasts came together to enjoy a concert and tea dance, with accompaniment by band Superlocrian, and refreshments baked and serve by members of Launchpad, a service based in Budleigh supporting adults with learning disabilities.
The audience watched in awe as professional dancers took to the ballroom floor, including BBC Spotlight’s Janine Jansen, alongside dance partner Sheldon. MC for the event was a former professional ballroom dancer who continues teaching and judging at Blackpool, Cheryl Berisford.
Chair of the Budleigh Music Festival, Kate Somerby, says that these events were a great way to start the week of festivities.
She added: “This year’s festival is all about encouraging as many people in our community immerse themselves in live music, and so to go from watching school children perform on Friday, to then witnessing the enjoyment on the faces of so many of our care home residents on Sunday, has been nothing short of brilliant.
I’d also like to particularly mention Launchpad who provided the most delicious cakes and bakes, not to mention service with a smile, and Budleigh Town Council and The Fryer’s Trust for sponsoring this event.”
Budleigh Music Festival continues until Saturday 8 July, and features performances by renowned musicians including jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth, pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, tenor James Gilchrist and previous BBC Young Musician winners Lara Melda playing a
