A training exercise turned into a rescue operation for Exmouth RNLI when a boat broke down in the River Exe.

The crews of both the all-weather lifeboat and inshore lifeboat were training in the water off Dawlish on the evening of Wednesday, June 7.

At 7.30pm a call came in from HM Coastguard sending them to the aid of a 28-foot yacht with engine failure that was caught in a flooding tide.

The yacht, with two people on board, needed urgent assistance as it was drifting towards other boats moored on the river.

The inshore lifeboat was first to arrive at the scene, crewed by Helm James Edge with Harry Griffin and Jake Butt, who secured the yacht and began an astern tow. Shortly afterwards the all-weather lifeboat, crewed by Coxswain Steve Hockings-Thompson, Andy Stott, Guy Munnings, Mark Cockman, Geoff Mills and Charles Swales, arrived and undertook an alongside tow.

The yacht was escorted to Exmouth Marina and both lifeboats were stood down at 7.52pm.
