Members of Budleigh Salterton Lions Club visited the Open Door Community Cafe in Exmouth earlier this month, and made a donation towards the ‘love your neighbour’ scheme to provide hot drinks and food to those in need.
Open Door has been at the heart of the community for over 25 years, seeking to make a positive difference in people’s lives and to help those most in need in the town.
Richard Allen, President of Budleigh Salterton Lions Club said: "Hunger is one of the Lions' Global Causes and as many people know we have been collecting food donations for the Exmouth Food Bank for some time now, and some of our members volunteer for the Budleigh Food Larder.
“I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit Open Door with members of the Lions Club and meet with Tim Chappell, the Head of Operations. We left with a much better understanding of how Open Door provides people in need with practical support, advice and counselling. We look forward to working with Open Door in the future."
Open Door Exmouth and the Budleigh Salterton Lions Club are both members of the local community food network, called Mushroom.
Everyone is welcome at Open Door for good quality, affordable food and drink, with 1:1 practical support, advice and counselling for those in need. There is a community fridge and showers, and the offer of clothing, sleeping bags and laundry facilities for those who are homeless.
There is also a Community Craft Room where people can learn and share craft skills, with a variety of projects and activities on offer in a relaxed, welcoming place to make friends. A Craft Café takes place every Tuesday afternoon. The 'Welcome' display was a collaboration piece, created by a number of the crafters who visit Open Door.
Budleigh Salterton Lions Club was formed over 40 years ago and their motto is 'We Serve'. Anyone who enjoys volunteering and would like to help make a difference in their community is invited to join their local Lions Club.
