An event supporting men’s mental health in Exmouth has been described as ‘awesome’ by one of the participants.
The ‘Alright Mate?’ session took place at the Corbeau Noir tattoo parlour on Sunday, January 8, after owner Sam Jenkins heard about the initiative and said he wanted to get involved.
Men were invited to come along and join an art session, making a Jenga-style sculpture out of wooden blocks inscribed with relevant words. Each man was given a block to inscribe his chosen word on, using pyrography (woodburning).
The idea was to create an environment where men could share their experiences and discuss why it can be hard to open up about their feelings and emotions. Similar events are taking place in other locations during January.
One of those who came to the Exmouth session was Alex, who said: “Today’s been welcoming, calming and educational. It's been an awesome space to learn and to share. It's a space for you to be able to share whatever you want to share, if you want to share."
He added that he would encourage other men to attend an Alright Mate session : "Once you take that first step it becomes infinitely easier."
Another participant, Chris, said: "Alright Mate is a really important initiative to raise awareness around men's mental health in a safe space with good people and an excellent cup of tea."
The wooden sculpture, called the 'Tower of Strength', will be on show at Exeter City’s football ground on Saturday, February 25, along with posters, videos and other works created during the art sessions in Devon.
