A man recovering from addiction is taking part in a 96-mile running challenge starting in Exmouth this December.

Shailem Dobson will start the challenge in Exmouth on December 27 and will run 96 miles to Old Harry Rocks near Studland in Dorset. He hopes to complete the challenge in just 36 hours and will be raising funds for Streetscene, one of the leading UK drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres in the UK.

Streetscene help treat people with ‘evidence based cognitive behavioral treatment approaches’ with one to one counselling and other treatments to help people understand and address addiction issues.

Fitness and running have played a big part in Shailem’s recovery, he took part in a half marathon at the start of the year and goes out for a local run every morning.

Shailem Dobson told the Journal: “I have been clean and sober since August 1 2021. My time in active addiction led to a dishonorable discharge from the British army, countless nights in police custody and a prison sentence, probation is still ongoing but I am stable now. I’ve been homeless and I’ve been lost.

“I was drinking recklessly to the point towards the end I was doing it all day every day from the moment I woke to the moment I slept. My drug use ended with smoking crack cocaine.

“A living nightmare. Alcohol and drugs once had a huge control over my life, for years I took no responsibility for my actions.

“I was consumed by the life of addiction. I took back that power. I now make every choice now with a clear head. I am clean and sober and I’m so bloody proud of it.

“Running is a huge part of my recovery. Im doing what I love in hope to raise money for an amazing cause.”

Shailem added: “For those of you struggling keep on going. I’m running for my recovery and to help inspire others that we do recover.”
