The Repair Cafe movement started in Amsterdam in 2009 and now there are over 2,200 worldwide. People bring their broken items and a team of volunteer 'fixers' will repair them free of charge.

The Sidmouth Repair Cafe was launched in 2018 and is now a thriving concern. Based at Sidmouth Youth Centre in Manstone Avenue, it takes place between 10am and 1pm on the last Saturday of every month except August and December. It averages between 40 and 60 visitors and has a team of about 20 volunteers including the team of 'fixers' whose skills cover electronics, sewing, carpentry, and even knife-sharpening.

When visitors arrive with their items they are greeted by friendly volunteers who decide which 'fixer' would suit them best. There's a cafe where everyone is welcome to drop by and enjoy free refreshments and cake, regardless of whether they have items for repair.

During the September Repair Cafe Denise and Bernie Millward from Budleigh Salterton brought in a broken clock and an ornament. “It's a miniature whale and was a gift from my son so it has great sentimental value,” said Denise. 'We're hoping that someone with cleverer fingers than ours can restore it.”

Marion Wood has been volunteering for six months. “I've loved sewing and crafting since I was a child. I feel it's more eco-friendly to repair things if possible and I also enjoy helping the community. A typical session might involve tasks like sewing a hem or putting in a zip, but I've also repaired much-loved dolls and vintage bags.”

Angela Carney, a co-founder of the Cafe said: “It's not just about repairing objects but also about growing and strengthening the local community, and sharing skills. Visitors will sit with the repairer who will show them what they are doing so they will have the option to have a go themselves in future.”

The Repair Cafe is run on a donation basis but there's no pressure to give. Donations are sufficient that the Cafe always covers its costs.

“New volunteer fixers, cafe and admin staff are always welcome, “ said Angie. “If you're interested the best first step is to for drop by for a chat and get a feel for where you might like to help.”

The next Repair Cafe is on Saturday, October 29 from 10am until 1pm at the Youth Centre.
