The po-faced response of a fire service spokesman to Ken Hodge's prompt action when he saw a blazing wheelie bin beggars belief (Journal last week).

For the benefit of those who do not know him, I would like to point out that, in former years, Ken gave selflessly of his time and energy to the fire service as a retained fireman, rising to the rank of sub-officer retained.

What a pity that the spokesman did not have the nous to praise Ken and to point out that the training is so good it stays with you for a lifetime.

That way more volunteers might have been encouraged to sign up.
