EXMOUTH lifeboat crew and the coastguard helicopter carried out a search of Lyme Bay on Sunday after a Mayday alert was received.
Exmouth and Teignmouth inshore lifeboats joined the search from the River Exe to Berry Head but nothing was found.
A coastguard spokesman it had received a spoken word Mayday on VHF Channel 16 and put out a broadcast on the radio.
A spokesperson said: "We tasked the helicopter and the Exmouth offshore and Teignmouth inshore lifeboats, who saturated the search area but they didn't find anything.
"It could have been a hoax or sometimes it happens when someone is being trained.
