EXMOUTH'S ambulance service, based at Liverton Business Park, is urging people not to ring 999 for an ambulance unless the call is life threatening.
Chief Executive Ken Wenman said they are taking just under 100 calls an hour, an increase of 46 per cent on usual demand across the four counties of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset and Somerset.
He said: "The service is used to coping with major incidents and plans with other agencies how to respond to those patients who are most vulnerable."
The service will cease all non-emergency patient transport.
