THE Exmouth branch of the Royal British Legion is calling for donations to pay to inscribe the names of Exmouth’s fallen heroes on to the Strand War Memorial - and to set up a fund for future conflicts.
RBL’s Tom Harvey-May said they wanted to add names including those of trooper Jack Sadler, Royal Marine Corporal Steve ‘Whisky’ Walker and Gunner Kinikki “Griff” Griffiths from the Royal Air Force Regiment.
But the cost of adding their names to the memorial will conservatively cost at least 500.
He said: “We need to put the names of these brave men on the memorial and heaven forbid any more in the future.
“We need to have a fund we can dip into when we need it.
“The sad fact that since the Second World War Britain has been constantly involved in smaller wars.
“And since 1945 the only year that not a single member of the armed forces has died in combat was 1968.
“We need to be prepared.”
