A CONCERNED Exmouth resident has hit out at South West Water for not fixing a sewage overflow which has left parts of the Maer covered in filth.

Ian Turnbull, of Roundhouse Lane, has contacted The Journal with pictures showing the mess, worried about the overflow from Maer Road pumping station.

He said: “I have spoken to South West Water about this problem on numerous occasions.

“They know the problem is there but are not prepared to spend to fix it.

“The spillage only happens after heavy rain so I suggested that it should be standard operating procedure that after heavy rain in Exmouth an operative should check for sewage?

“Does this happen? In a word, no.”

Mr Turnbull added: “People complain about dog mess on the Maer but I feel that this is a lot worse and it is about time that SWW got their act together and sorted this disgusting problem out once and for all.”

A spokesperson for South West Water said they were aware of the problem.

He said: “We are continuing our investigations into the causes of this problem which unfortunately does occur during periods of heavy rainfall and high tides.

“We will be undertaking further studies into these drainage issues and will then prioritise investment in areas that are most at risk.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Any customers with concerns can call us on our free, 24-hour customer services helpline on 0800 169 1144.”
