As Chairman of Budleigh Salterton, East Budleigh and Otterton Branch of the Royal British Legion, I was somewhat surprised at the comments of Mr Slater, regarding the music at the Armistice Day Service (letter, May 12).
The music is very traditional: All People that on Earth do Dwell (Ketche 1562), Eternal Father Strong to Save (Dykes 1861) and Dear Lord and Father of Mankind (Whittier 1872, tune by Sir Charles Parry).
However, given the constant vagaries and varieties of theological fashion in the Church of England in general, the abandonment of tradition in favour of fads and the “modernisation” of the English Language, Mr Slater may well have a point.
