The art trail is returning to Exmouth in May as part of the town’s annual festival celebrations.

Artist Anna Fitzgerald, of Sea Dog Art Gallery, in Gussiford Lane, dreamed up the unique idea of an Exmouth Art Trail last year, inspiring scores of residents to dream up a host of quirky creations.

This year’s trail has the theme This is Me, which Anna hopes will encourage those taking part to find out more about each other.

She said: “Last year it was lovely for neighbours to see what each other did; people didn’t know what their neighbour did.

“Anybody can get involved. You don’t have to live on the trail or be artistic.

“It just must be fun and be as big and as wild as possible.

“I am quite excited seeing what the neighbours do. What’s really nice is saying ‘go with it’. You don’t know what people are going to do.”

Last year scores of volunteers helped make thousands of pompoms to decorate Rolle Flats. Highlights of last year’s event include a giant lampost giraffe, a crochet campervan and four-year-old Spike Seymour’s ‘animals that poo’ drawings.

Anna is calling for ideas to create another large-scale art installation at the same site, which everyone can get involved in creating.

She also hopes to hear from community groups, willing to decorate the inside of two-man tents as part of a mini Glasto-type exhibition.

Those visiting the art trail will have the chance to win their own signed Picasso print, by entering a competition.

People living in the town are again invited to show off their creations, or display a favourite piece of art, painting, object, photograph - or even a favourite picture torn from a magazine.

Anyone with a creative project - artists, crafters, poets, knitters, photographers – can display their work, even if they do not live on the trail route.

Rolle Road, Bicton Street, Raleigh Road, Louisa Place and Carlton Hill will become a walk-around art gallery with several buildings en-route used to exhibit work.

• Art trail craft sessions are being held every second Monday of the month at of Sea Dog Art gallery, and every second Saturday at the Blackmore Theatre.

There are also drop-in art trail creative sessions being held at the Exmouth Market Association, The Strand, starting on Saturday, January 21, from 9am.
