FRIENDS of a man who founded a popular Exmouth club who died after a long illness have paid tribute to the 'respectable character'.
Eighty-two-year-old Roy Burch, who set up the town's bridge club and magnolia group, died on Wednesday, May, 20, last month. He had suffered from liver cancer for the latter part of his life.
A funeral service took place yesterday, June 3, at St John in the Wilderness Church in Exmouth.
Shelagh Hughes, 74, of Bellevue Road, said Roy had accomplished so much for the clubs. "He was a teacher of bridge more than 40 years ago.

Shelagh said unfortunately Roy had not been the same person towards the end of his life because of the health problems he suffered. "Before that he was always laughing and joking," she said.

Shelagh's husband, Brian Hughes, 74, said Roy would also often play in Exeter.
"Without him forming the clubs a lot of people would not have had half the enjoyment they have had," Brian added.
Carla Pickering, 74, of Shelley Road, Exmouth, said Roy was a 'respected man' and would be sorely missed.
"The many positive aspects to which he contributed to the clubs should be the way he is remembered."
The Exmouth Bridge Club meets four times each week at Bystock Court.
