THE Lions Club is leading tributes to an Exmouth 'fountain of knowledge' who gave his life to charity.

Dedicated Lions Club member David Green, 75, of Byron Way, died on Saturday as he was driving back from a Lions cabinet meeting in Okehampton.

Lions Club vice district governor for the south west Clif Cane, who was with Mr Green shortly before he died, said the dedicated Lion member would be a hard act to follow.

He said Mr Green had been instrumental in helping him stand for office.

"He will be sadly missed. He will be a difficult man to replace," said Mr Cane. "He was a very good man and a great support to me.

"He was a fountain of knowledge and gave me a lot of advice.

"I was talking to him within the hour before he died. That means a lot to me."

Mr Green died on Saturday November 7 shortly before 1pm.

The police said his blue Peugeot 307 collided with a parked car on George Street, in Okehampton.

Mr Green was taken to hospital, where he later died.

A post mortem carried out this week showed the Lions Club member died from natural causes, and not as a result of the accident.

Mr Green moved to Exmouth three years ago with his daughter, Amanda, son-in-law Alan and grandson Ryan.

He had previously lived in Bedford but when his wife, Valerie, died he followed his family to Exmouth when they decided to relocate.

A Bedford Lions Club member for many years, Mr Green previously held the senior post of District Governor, responsible for the greater London area.

When he moved to Devon, Mr Green transferred to the Exmouth Lions Club, and then to the Exeter west group, where he was appointed on the cabinet as district constitution, nominations and resolutions officer.

Mr Green organised a number of activities within the club, including a young carers' day at Crealy.

* Mr Green's funeral will be held at 2pm on Friday November 20, at Withycombe Church. The service will be followed by a private cremation.
