Retirement flats developer McCarthy and Stone is to take over the former Devon County Council care home Davey Court.

The developer says it plans to demolish the existing care home building, in Buckingham Close, and replace it with 30 ‘high-quality’ apartments for the elderly.

Davey Court was closed by the council last year.

The developer will be holding a public exhibition about its plans at The Clinton Arms, Maer Lane, on September 28, between 3pm and 7pm.

Simon Mantell of McCarthy and Stone, said: “We want to hear from the local community and our future homeowners before we finalise our plans. Our proposal provides an important opportunity to deliver a sensitive residential development that will significantly improve the housing choices for early retirees in Exmouth.”

A spokesman added that McCarthy and Stone believed there was a strong need for specialist retirement accommodation across East Devon.

Reacting to the news, county councillor Eileen Wragg, whose Littleham and Town ward includes the site, said: “It does concern me. I believe developers of sheltered housing projects like this should be making a contribution towards health and social care.

“There is bound to be an inward migration of elderly retired people, and that’s fine, but what we don’t want to see is when they need health and social care, as many of us will, that it might make provision of those services difficult.”
