A Budleigh Salterton town councilllor has raised concerns that an enlarged window at the old Barclays Bank could alter the 'uniqueness' of the town.

The town council debated an application to put in larger windows at 48 High Street on Monday (April 11).

Councillors supported the application as long as the conservation manager also gave their backing to the plan.

Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Alan Jones said this application could change the town’s image.

He said: “The High Street has been beginning to change over the last 10 years and we are letting change after change.

“The public wants to keep the uniqueness of Budleigh Salterton, which is the shops and the general appearance of the town.”

Mayor Courtney Richards said the changes would make the property more marketable.

He said: “It would change the nature of the building, but I would support this change because I think the windows as they are would become restrictive, if someone did want to go in there and open a business.”

The final decision will be made by the district council.
