There are concerns that two new blocks of flats will spoil an Exmouth beauty spot.

A bid to demolish two buildings and build 14 flats in Maer Road, next to The Maer, will be debated by town planners next Tuesday.

Exmouth-based Eagle Investments want to build one block of nine flats another block of five at Dunsinane.

One of two buildings earmarked for demolition on the 0.466 hectare site is almost 100 years old and the other was built in the 1960s.

The decision whether to back the plans were previously deferred because town councillors were unwilling to make a ruling until a more detailed report of sewerage and surface water was provided by South West Water.

However residents are concerned and John and Patricia Daly of Maer Road said: “It is completely out of keeping with this lovely area …and would be obtrusive and very ugly and far too congested and high.

“There would also…be great sewage problems with so many properties.”

Bernard Cracknell of Maer Road said: “These buildings are brutally modern, cold, and unattractive and out of keeping.”

Campaign Group Save Avenues from Despoliation say that the height of the building is not in keeping with the area.

The final decision will be made by district planners.
