The May Bank Holiday is upon us, and although the weather may look unsettled, we have rounded up the best five pubs you can visit.

Surely there is nothing better to do in Britain than going to the pub with a loved one or your mates. Especially to toast that summer is just around the corner and the fact that you have a three-day weekend. (Shout out to those workers who are continuing to work throughout the bank holiday, though).

Here are the best pubs in East Devon, according to their reviews on Tripadvisor.

The Sidmouth Arms, Upottery:

This pub is rated 4-and-a-half stars out of five on Tripadvisor, which is based on 466 reviews, has been voted 6th best restaurant in Honiton and has won a Travellers Choice Award.

In April last year, owners Martin Philips and his family took over the freehold of the free house from national brewer Stonegate.

Wilf L visited in April and said it was "well worth a visit, with a great atmosphere, really friendly and attentive staff, superb Sunday Lunch, good selection of beers, good parking. Thoroughly recommend."

The Castle Inn, Axminster:

The Castle Inn has five out of five stars on TripAdvisor, is rated the number one pubs in Axminster and has won a Travellers Choice Award.

96 reviews for the pub in total, all of which are five-star. TripAdvisor member Peter O said: "Genuinely lovely landlord and landlady. Passionate about customer service and really keen to talk and engage. Exactly the kind of pub you want when visiting from outside town."

The Volunteer Inn, Sidmouth:

This pub is rated four-and-a-half out of five stars, has been rated the fifth-best restaurant in Sidmouth and has 197 reviews on TripAdvisor.

Robert S gave the Freehouse a five-star review and said it had "friendly staff, great food great beer".

He added: "Friendly staff that were enjoying their job. It is a pub and you could just enjoy a beer or two but it would be a shame to miss the food. I had a great burger with best slaw ever. Booked in for another meal there and then."

The Volunteer Inn, Ottery St Mary:

This pub of the same name is rated five out of five stars on TripAdvisor and is in the top three pubs in Ottery St Mary.

It has claimed 177 reviews. I speak for myself when I say this is a lovely pub.

I was invited here after an Ottery St Mary town planning meeting. I of course stuck to the Coca-Cola as I was driving, but the councillors were all enjoying an Otter Brewery ale on a cold September night.

The Bicton Inn, Exmouth:

This pub has the acclaimed five stars on TripAdvisor.

It's a proper locals' pub which hosts live music nights and events.

John G visited and said: "What a nice pub. Landlord is welcoming and a good choice of real ales. We popped in for a quick pint before going for a curry, so time was short. Will visit again when next in Exmouth."

The Point, Exmouth:

This has four stars of five based on 564 reviewers.

The location really sells the pub with impressive views of the Marina and overlooking the estuary.

It was nominated in March for a Muddy Stilettos small business recognition.

Norma P said: it was well worth a visit.

"Delicious food not a massive selection on the menu but certainly enough especially with a specials board too. Friendly helpful staff. Lovely position overlooking Exmouth Marina."
