A 'hastily organised' collection in Exmouth for the disaster relief charity Shelterbox raised more than £1,300 last month.

Following the news of the earthquake in Morocco on September 8 and the floods in Libya two days later, Exmouth Rotary Club arranged to collect donations from shoppers at the Tesco superstore.

Tesco's Community Champion agreed to let Rotarians bring their collection buckets to the supermarket during the weekend of September 16 and 17, and they collected £1,333. Thiis will pay for two Shelterboxes containing a tent and bedding for eight people, along with basic cooking equipment.

The chairman of Exmouth Rotary Club’s fund-raising committee, Ralph Howard-Williams, said: "The collection was hastily organised with the co-operation of Tesco and I thank them for continuing support; I also thank the generous people of Exmouth who once again supported an appeal for those affected by tragedy in another part of the world."

An earlier collection by the Rotary club raised £4,500, also for ShelterBox, contributing to the relief of the people of Türkiye and Syria.
