The Reverend Richard Coles – the Radio 4 presenter, Strictly Come Dancing contestant and former member of the 1980s band The Communards – is to appear in Budleigh Salterton to talk about his extraordinary and varied career.

He’ll be at St Peter’s Church at 7pm on Tuesday, February 20, in a special event, organised by the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival. Doors will open from 6pm, when refreshments will be on sale.

Previously due to appear at this year’s literary festival, the Rev Coles had to cancel his appearance due to a filming engagement.

“He promised he’d come!” says a spokesperson for the event. “For all those fans who were disappointed when he had to withdraw from the 2017 Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, we’re delighted to bring you an evening with the nonchalant and charming Radio 4 Saturday Live presenter and erstwhile Strictly Dancing contestant.

“He’ll be talking about his extraordinary career that has taken him from the 1980s band The Communards to his ordination as a parish priest. Broadcaster, journalist, MasterChef contestant and Big Painting Challenge presenter, Rev Richard Coles will take us through the challenges of running a modern-day parish and a busy career in the limelight.”

In the 1980s multi-instrumentalist Coles joined ex-Bronksi Beat vocalist Jimmy Somerville to form The Communards. The band had three top ten hits, including a number one in 1986 with ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’. From 1991 to 1994 Coles studied for a BA in theology at London’s King’s College. He then trained for the priesthood, becoming ordained in 2005.

Now vicar of Finedon in Northamptonshire, his radio career blossomed on Radio 4, from 2008 onwards. In July 2016 he appeared on BBCTV’s Masterchef, and, earlier this year was a contestant on BBC TV’s Strictly Come Dancing. Paired with professional dancer Diane Buswell, they were the second couple to be eliminated.

Tickets for the event are £12 each, available at Budleigh Tourist Information Centre, Fore Street (01395 445275, opening hours: 10am-1pm, Monday to Saturday), and The Card Shop Too, High Street, Budleigh Salterton (cash or cheques only).
