Special screening of Felix in Honiton

18:30 08 November 2012

CLASSIC cartoons and a Scallywag Puppets show are in store at a show to take place in Honiton.

Vintage Felix the Cat films have long been collected by Somerset composer Colin Cowles.

His music has been played on radio and television and also used in documentary films. He is widely published and known worldwide amongst woodwind players.

What is less well known is his passionate hobby of collecting Felix the Cat films from the 1920s and his collection includes 96 different titles, one of the largest collections in the world.

These silent classic cartoons became ideal outlets for his descriptive style of composing and has resulted in many original music tracks to accompany the films, the culmination to date being the showing of three rare films at the Melbourne and London Animation Festivals in 2010.

Felix the Cat cartoons seem very relevant today and are created with simplistic animation and the reliance on visual stimuli engages the viewer from beginning to end.

The Disney cartoons are works of art and, as such, bear constant repetition. They are suitable for young and old alike and also those in the middle!

Gina Scarbro, also living in Somerset, has had a passion for puppets since a child.

Totally self taught, she especially enjoys building puppet theatres and making puppets and usually has some puppet project up her sleeve.

Keeping an audience wondering what is coming next and making them laugh is her aim. Gina is a member of the British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild and often appears at the Cheltenham Puppet Festival under the name Scallywag Puppets.

She also has a strong interest in cinema and it was through the Curzon Collection at Clevedon that she met Colin Cowles and where the combination of puppet and cartoon shows was born. Gina was delighted to have the chance to create a Felix the Cat marionette, complete with his dance, for Colin’s film Homage to Felix.

This will be a very entertaining evening for all ages and a wonderful start to the Christmas season.

It will be held at the Mackarness Hall, Honiton, on Saturday, December 1, at 6pm.

Tickets, costing £5 for adults, and £3 for children, to include refreshments, are available from St Paul’s, Honiton, church office, Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm or on the night.
