In the days before church organs, the music was provided by musicians who performed in the galleries at the west end of churches.

West Gallery music was eventually abolished around 150 years ago because it was not considered solemn enough.

But West Gallery music is going through a revival and can be heard again on February 11, in Lympstone Parish Church when The West Gallery Quire will be performing a concert of sacred and secular music dressed in 19th century costume.

Tickets are £7 available from Jill Wilson on 01395 264753. The concert starts at 7.30pm.
