A choir of military wives and girlfriends from Lympstone Commando Training Centre is set to appear on one of the year’s most anticipated albums.

The Lympstone Military Wives’ Choir was formed last year, after the national success of the Chivenor Military Wives Choir, who appeared on BBC TV show The Choir and subsequently achieved a Christmas number one single.

So far, the Chivenor choir has raised £500,000 for military charities, and members have now announced plans for an album, In My Dreams.

Following an invitation from Chivenor choir director Gareth Malone, the album will also feature the Lympstone choir, which has recorded two tracks.

The choir will appear on the album’s title track, which was recorded for a mass choir performance, and a version of Buddy Holly’s True Love Ways, performed solely by Lympstone singers.

Since the album was announced earlier this week, it has already rocketed up the pre-order charts, raising hopes that it could match the Christmas single’s number one success.

Lympstone choir leader Sam Abrahams said: “I was contacted by Gareth, who said there was a project in the pipeline, and the next day Tom Lewis, from Decca Records, rang.

“He said they were doing a military wives album, and asked if we would like to be involved.”

The choir only had a week to prepare for the recording - and rehearsals were intense.

Sam said: “We did 30 hours of rehearsals at my house, with ladies coming in and out with kids, and bringing tea and milk because my house was being ransacked two or three times a day!

“Then, the producer, Jon Cohen, and his team turned up to our chapel at the Commando Training Centre and, part by part, we did the recording.”

Sam says the recording process was an amazing experience for the choir, which had only been together for a matter of months.

“It was really exciting, and the girls absolutely loved it – they’ll treasure it for the rest of their lives.

“They never thought it would get this far, and they’re absolutely delighted it’s come to something like this.”

In My Dreams will be released on March 5, with proceeds going to the Military Wives’ Choir Foundation.
