She picked up the Synderborough Farm Rising Stars Trophy for her points championship success as well as the St Michael’s School shield for winning the race.
It was Smith’s fifth win of the season and, once again, Imogen Darke’s Ravara Super Ted (Pippa Glanville) was a gallant runner up. Third was Balfour Skipper (Donald Comer Calder), running his best race of the season, with fourth-placed Ginger Wizard clinching second place in the 138s points championship for Jake Bament. Michael Treneer, My Golden Dream, was third in the points championship. It won’t be long before Tyler Heard, Elizabeth Langton and Ella Pickard are featuring in the points shake-up, all have had good first seasons.
The 148 final was and out and out sprint, the Torrington course being by far the shortest of the season, and was won by the Frost family’s Tarka (Donald Comer Calder).
Comer Calder, 14, who won the David Pipe sponsored Ride of the Day award for his efforts, beat the favourite, reigning national champion Total Eclipse (Hannah Welch), and Petite Pois (Pippa Glanville) who needs much further than this distance to shine. Fourth was Annie IV (Barnaby Treneer), running another good race.
It had all happened at the start of this race as Chester Williams was unseated on Shes So Cool on the way to post and, due to the regulations, had to be seen by the doctor before he could race even though he had landed on his feet. Annie IV was on her toes, Dandy Heights kicked both Petite Pois and Flareon while the ponies were circling at the start and Hannah Welch did well to deal calmly with Total Eclipse while all that was going on.
Flareon, who won the Allerton Organics 148s points championship for Heidi Lewis, could never get on terms on a sprinters’ track, but the pair’s efforts over the season also secured Lewis the Alan Walter Horse Transport Trophy for the most improved rider which earned her the chance of a week’s work experience with NH trainer and former champion lady point to point rider Polly Gundry.
Bryony Frost, who has since graduated to point to pointing, was second in the 148s points table with Hannah Welch third (Vadlawalkover).
