Devon and Cornwall pony race riders, parents and organisers enjoyed an end of season presentation evening at Exeter racecourse. The evening featured a video review of the season courtesy of Jeff Guyett, a filmshow of riders and their ponies in non-racing activities and a quiz with a £50 Harley Equestrian voucher prize organised and sponsored by Colin and Karyn Heard. It was set up as the sport lost its annual finals when Torrington Farmers’ point to point was cancelled and the area awards are normally presented after racing there.
The overall points winner was 138 rider Tina Smith on Bejowans Bouquet who retained the Synderborough Farm Rising Stars Trophy for the second year. Second in the 138s was Michael Treneer on Talponciau Perfect Print and third Tyler Heard on Bejowans Bouquet. Second overall and winner of the 148 category, and the Allerton Organics Shield, was Jake Bament on Dandy Heights. Second was Heidi Lewis with Miss Mopsy and third Thomasina Eyston on Annie IV. The six riders received special championship hoodies sponsored by David Pipe Racing.
The winner of the Alan Walter Horse Transport trophy for the most improved rider was Tamby Welch on Rosslayne Enchante, who has just completed his first season pony racing.
Other awards were given to Michael Treneer and Jake Bament for their ponies consistent performance during the season.
A presentation was also made to the four riders - Pippa Glanville, Jake Bament, Heidi Lewis and Ella Pickard - who are leaving the sport, having reached their 16th birthdays this season. Mrs Angela Heath and Mr Julian Greatrex presented bespoke NH racing whips to the four who also had special commemorative rosettes in their racing colours, presented by Devon Rosettes. Mrs Heath said she was looking forward to seeing the riders competing in point to points next season.
Bament, Lewis and Glanville then made some presentations of their own to area organiser Lee Glanville and area secretary Claire Hitch as well as area steward Angela Heath, area starter Kelvin Heard and helpers Colin Heard, Lizzy Hynds and Jill Gratton.
The awards night was kindly organised and sponsored by George and Rebecca Welch, with help from Mark and Deborah Treneer and Colin and Karyn Heard and looks set to become an annual event.
