He partnered the Prince family’s Wee Antony to victory in the 138 race and won the 148cm on his own Calypso.
Cobden was only able to ride two ponies as two withdrawals from the original line-up let both reserves in for a run (and they finished first and second in the 148 race).
The 138 race was a quality affair with multiple winning ponies in the field but many with new riders. The race went to the form book with Wee Antony, second in the national Charles Owen 138 final at Aintree under the same rider, relishing the 6f trip. Tyler Heard did a great job on his new ride, Bronze Lawrance, who was so successful for owner Hannah Welch two season’s ago. Heard got a taste of the sport last year on his 20 year old schoolmaster Master Mink, but was up with in the van throughtout on ‘Larry’. Also riding a good race was William Cox who was third on Diptford Moonwalker - all three beating last year’s Devon and Cornwall champion Bejowan’s Bouquet and Tina Smith who set the benchmark.
Megan Lawrence had a great ride on her new pony Balfour Skipper, Michael Treneer did well on the speedy Talponciau Perfect Print and Tamby Welch (Rosslayne Enchante) and Ashleigh Summersby (Brimclose Toffee Brulee) enjoyed their first ever rides and are certain to be in the mix later in the season.
The 148 at Buckfastleigh is one of the sprint races of the season, being just 7f but there is a testing uphill finish, especially in soft going. Calypso made light work of the hill and won comfortably for Cobden, while Megan Nicholls (Cool Runner) and Pippa Glanville (Petite Pois) had a great race for second, Nicholls getting the call.
Millie Wonnacott rode to orders and got a great start - and finish - her fourth placed effort earning her a pair of bespoke racing boots sponsored by Classic Boots, for ride of the day.
